In a recent interview with SciFi
Wire, Guillermo del Toro, director of the upcoming PAN’S LABYRINTH, said that he
would like to make a movie based on Ronald Dahl’s novel THE WITCHES.
When asked about the version that
was made in 1990 del Toro had this to say: “I liked a lot
of the Roeg film, but I really, really disliked that the ending was changed,
because I think the essence of the Dahl story is that the kid remains a mouse,”
said del Toro, who said The Witches is his favorite Dahl book. “Having
said that, how the hell do I know that they won’t change it on me again? They
probably did that to Nicholas Roeg. So it may happen again. But I want to try.”
For those of you who are unfamiliar
with Dahl’s story, it’s about a boy who lives with his grandmother in England.
The boy discovers a plot by witches to turn all the children in the world into
mice. The boy eventually gets turned into a mouse himself and has to battle the witches
in his current form.
