How’d you like to wake up and discover that you’re a rotting corpse who should be dead. Pretty grim, eh? That was the basis of Hideshi Hino’s thoughtful horror manga called LVIING CORPSE, which took the time to explore such themes as what life truly is and how deeply family love and loyalty run.
Gotta wonder how much of that intelligent consideration will be retained in THE DROWNING MAN, a spec script based on the graphic novel. Intermedia has optioned the project from writer Adam Alleca and is labeling it as a sci-fi action-thriller. The proffered synopsis also sounds like they may be taking it in a different direction:
[T]he story centers on a man who wakes up without a pulse and soon discovers that he is at the center of a macabre government experiment.
Perhaps a shuffling, metaphysically confused corpse seems too heavy a subject to the prodco. We’ll wait to see if they do right by the manga, but at first blush I’m pretty much thinking not.
