Disney hands Amy Adams thriller The Woman in the Window over to Netflix

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

With Joe Wright at the helm and a cast that includes Amy Adams, Gary Oldman, Anthony Mackie, Wyatt Russell, Brian Tyree Henry, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Julianne Moore, the thriller THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW seemed destined to be a great film. Unfortunately, it has turned out to be a troubled production, as a test screening resulted in reshoots that altered the film so substantially that the score Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross composed for it couldn't even be used anymore. Screenwriter Tracy Letts has said that everyone involved had been pleased with the film before the studio-ordered rewrites and reshoots that he had nothing to do with, which makes me concerned for the final product.

THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW was a Fox production that Disney inherited when they purchased the company, and now they have decided to ditch the plan to give it a theatrical release. It's being acquired by Netflix, with the streaming service planning to make it a "global event film".

Based on a novel by A.J. Finn  (you can pick up a copy HERE), the film tells the story of

an agoraphobic child psychologist who befriends a neighbor across the street from her New York City brownstone, only to see her own life turned upside down when the woman disappears and she suspects foul play.

THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW was originally scheduled to reach theatres on October 4, 2019. Due to the reshoots, it was pushed back to May 15, 2020… and then it was delayed again due to the pandemic.

Netflix has not yet announced when it will be available to watch on the streaming service.
