One of the most interesting box office weekends in recent memory is about to happen. Last week saw the release of Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil, which blew away box office predictions with a massive $60 million weekend. It should make about $30 million this weekend, but will that be enough for it to top the return of The Avengers to the big screen? While Avengers: Doomsday is still months away, Avengers: Endgame Encore comes out this weekend with some new footage. Disney is banking on Marvel fans showing up in droves, and I’m thinking it should make about $25 million. Even if it’s a movie everyone already owns, fans won’t be able to resist the new footage.
However, three other movies are also opening this weekend that have a shot at opening well. Third place will likely go to A24’s Chris Hansen movie, Primetime, starring Robert Pattinson. The intrigue of A24’s brand, the storyline, and Pattinson’s role should get it a $20 million opening.
Brad Pitt also has a movie out this weekend, Heart of the Beast, which teams him with a canine companion in this survival drama (which we loved). While it’s probably going to open more modestly than other Pitt vehicles, it should still manage about $18 million, and word-of-mouth on it is going to be terrific, with the studio no doubt hoping that this will have box office legs.
The odd one out this weekend is DreamWorks Animation’s Forgotten Island. It’s apparently a terrific movie (our review drops tomorrow), and the studio has been aggressively screening it, going all the way back to CinemaCon in April. But the tracking for the film is pretty poor, with it unlikely to open north of $12 million, which would be a huge disappointment for the studio. Nonetheless, it’s a rare thing these days when all five of the top movies are looking at grosses in the double digits, so that’s to be celebrated.

- Primetime: $20 million
- Heart of the Beast: $18 million
- Forgotten Island: $12 million
