It was well over two years since it was first announced that Jurassic World: Dominion director Colin Trevorrow would be directing a movie about Atlantis for Universal Pictures. Well, THR has reported that the movie is still in the works, but that it’s jumped ship to Skydance and has tapped Charmaine DeGraté to write the script.

Colin Trevorrow has previously said that the myths of Atlantis are actually rather relevant to today’s world. “For a generation right now to be able to enter a world that is not unlike their world – where their elders have basically gifted them a civilization that is dying – I think it is the right moment for that story,” Trevorrow said. This story won’t depict Atlantis as a ruined city at the bottom of the ocean, but rather one on a lost continent in the Indian ocean occupied by a “multicultural civilization with its own advanced technology.” Atlantis is a story that has always fascinated Colin Trevorrow, who said that it’s the “only thing that equals dinosaurs for me.“ The director said, “I guess I tend to go back to the past. But, you know, it was the first time that we had technology. And it’s at a time when we had other kinds of creatures that aren’t around anymore There are just so many things about it that are fascinating to me. So yeah, I’m a deep nerd for it.

After initially developing the Atlantis movie at Universal, the studio returned the project to Trevorrow in turnaround, and Skydance jumped at the chance to snatch it up. The previous script was penned by Dante Harper (Alien: Covenant), based on a story Trevorrow co-wrote with Matt Charman (Bridge of Spies). Charmaine DeGraté and Trevorrow have “reconceived” the project, but it will still revolve around the mythical civilization. Charmaine DeGraté is best known for her work on The 100 and House of the Dragon. She’s also set to write and co-executive produce Leslye Headland’s upcoming Star Wars series, The Acolyte.

Colin Trevorrow’s last movie was Jurassic World: Dominion, which is now available on 4K Ultra HD.
