Cult classic scifi movie Cube is getting the remake treatment

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Back in 1997 while working at a Blockbuster Video, I spotted the cover for Vincenzo Natali's CUBE. The Canadian scifi flick was one of the more entertaining movies I had seen in a long time and I recommended it to everyone that came in to my store. Now, 18 years and two crappy sequels later, CUBE is getting the remake treatment courtesy of a young, up and coming filmmaker.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Saman Kesh will direct CUBED, a "re-imagining" of Natali's original film.

7 complete strangers of widely varying personality characteristics are involuntarily placed in an endless kafkaesque maze containing deadly traps.

CUBE was very reminiscent of classic episodes of The Twilight Zone and you never quite figured out what was going on. The sequel and prequel further complicated the story that thrived on simple narrative and complex death scenes. The remake is being produced by THE LEGO MOVIE's Roy Lee and PROMETHEUS screenwriter Jon Spaihts. Director Saman Kesh is best known for his short film Controller.

On one hand, a remake should get the original film some more recognition. On the other, it could be a fourth film in a film franchise with only one good entry to date. I will reserve judgement until I see who appears in the film, but so far I am not a fan of this project.
