Way back when, we ran a story on Majesco getting the rights to bring comic book THE DARKNESS to the small screen for the XBOX 360. Over the weekend, Gamespot had a little hands-on preview of the game, which is set for release next year.
Being produced by Starbreeze (the same dudes who made the excellent CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK: ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY), the game already has high expectations, and from the first glimpse, it doesn’t disappoint.
The game picks up after main character Jackie Estacado gains the ageless power that is The Darkness. Armed with two pistols, the first level of the demo had the player infiltrate a meat factory and burn the money of one of Jackie’s enemies. The much-vaunted “vo-cap” technology in the game has been designed to allow for realistic emotion on artificial characters, as evidenced by the first encounter with an NPC. The overall graphical quality of the game is very high, but facial expressions are particularly realistic.
As for the different attacks at Jackie’s disposal, he can dual-wield weapons, with the left and right triggers firing the relevant pistols. Jackie will also reload the guns automatically. Obviously, the cooler part of the weaponry are Jackie’s Demon Arms, which allow him to attack enemies and pick up objects out of reach. A quick tap of the controller’s left bumper lets you call upon the demon attacks, but they will lose energy unless you head back into the darkness to replenish them, adding some nice strategy to the game. Along with the Demon Arms, you can also summon demons to take out enemies as well.
The game is still far from being complete, as evidenced by the bugs in AI and lockups, but for the most part, the game is on track for its release date. To read the rest of the preview, smack here.
