Update:

After dropping an enthralling final trailer for Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day, the first reactions to the film are circulating online. The screening, attended by journalists and critics, yielded some of the most glowing sentiments I’ve seen in a while for a science-fiction movie. Some say it’s one of the best films in the genre in ages. Hell yeah!

What the critics are saying:

Collider‘s Steven Weintraub said, “In a shock to absolutely no one, Steven Spielberg has delivered another towering home run with Disclosure Day. I could go on and on about what I loved, but I was lucky enough to see the movie knowing almost nothing, and I strongly recommend you do the same. Stop watching the trailers. The one thing I will say: Emily Blunt is incredible. I know big summer movies aren’t usually the kinds of performances that get awards-season attention, but once people see what she does in this…”

Meanwhile, Slashfilm‘s Bill Bria commented, “Disclosure Day is the weirdest movie Spielberg’s ever made (complimentary). Breathtaking compositions, David Koepp’s X-FILES-meets-The Bible script is one big high-wire act, Emily Blunt’s most accomplished performance, John Williams’ best score in years. Riveting, moving stuff.”

IndieWire‘s Jim Hemphill wrote, “Disclosure Day is top tier Spielberg, as exhilarating as Raiders but with the emotional texture & increased ambition of his post-9/11 work. Right from the opening Spielberg lays down the gauntlet and reminds you that he does this stuff better than anybody in the history of film.”

Gizmodo‘s Germain Lussier said, “I loved Disclosure Day. A dense roller coaster ride blending chase film, love story, & mystery, all wrapped in sci-fi wonder. It’s Spielberg’s best film in 20 years, filled w/ all the magic that makes his films so special, plus an all-time character/performance by Emily Blunt.”

Freelance critic Tessa Smith offered these glowing remarks, “Disclosure Day is ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL! Truly something special. I was hanging onto every word, captivated by the story as it all played out. The score perfectly elevates every single scene. Part mystery, part Twilight Zone, something new entirely. I shed a tear at the end. WOW.”

WOW indeed! It sounds like one of the greatest living directors has done it again, folks! I was thinking about waiting until Disclosure Day comes to digital to check it out, but these reactions have me thinking I need to make the effort to see it in theaters. I know a few of the critics listed above, and they’re straight shooters. I’m in.

Steven Spielberg has brought us a couple of the most iconic alien films with Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. – The Extra-Terrestrial. Now, the blockbuster maestro has returned to the sci-fi world with a new UFO movie that remained shrouded in secret during development. His new film, Disclosure Day, hints at a day when the secrets of alien life will be revealed to the world. David Koepp wrote the film’s screenplay, based on a story by Spielberg.

Universal and Amblin Entertainment has released the final trailer for Disclosure Day before it hits theaters on June 12. In the final trailer, Spielberg himself talks about harkening back to the curiosity and the wonder that he had when he made Close Encounters. The famous director states that he believes now more than ever that we’re not alone and the new film aims to explore how the world would change once everything comes to light.

They hit on all the classic hallmarks here — crop circles, Area 51 and Roswell, plus the classic Grey aliens. In addition to the new trailer, Universal has also released the new IMAX poster for Disclosure Day, which features the Josh O’Connor character in the middle of a crop circle. Check it out below.

The official press release reads:

Universal Pictures is proud to release a new original event film created and directed by Steven Spielberg. The film stars SAG winner and Oscar® nominee Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer, A Quiet Place), Emmy and Golden Globe winner Josh O’Connor (Challengers, The Crown), Oscar® winner Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, Kingsman franchise), Eve Hewson (Bad Sisters, The Perfect Couple) and two-time Oscar® nominee Colman Domingo (Sing Sing, Rustin).

Based on a story by Spielberg, the screenplay is by David Koepp, whose previous work with Spielberg includes the scripts for Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Combined, those films earned more than $3 billion worldwide. Koepp also wrote the script for this 2025’s Jurassic World Rebirth.

Disclosure Day is produced by five-time Academy Award® nominee Kristie Macosko Krieger (The Fabelmans, West Side Story) and by Spielberg for Amblin Entertainment. The executive producers are Adam Somner and Chris Brigham.
