Since it was opening up against a little movie called FURRY VENGEANCE, it’s no surprise that Platinum Dunes’ A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET rocked the number one spot at this weekend’s box office… although the actual numbers the film took in felt a titch below par.
In the first three days of release, NIGHTMARE grossed a solid $32.2M, blowing it’s $30M budget out of the water. In that respects, the film knocked it out of the park. But if you look back at last year’s FRIDAY THE 13TH, which opened up in February, then NIGHTMARE didn’t really do too well. FRIDAY opened with $40M and broke all kinds of February records. So for the weekend right before the summer movie season kicks off, NIGHTMARE’s $32.2M isn’t so hot.
Which isn’t surprising as it seems like most people didn’t care for the remake. Bad reviews are running rampant (though I’ve seen a few positive ones out there), and it’s not going to be extremely successful… so who knows whether there will be a sequel or not. I’m gonna say not.
