The reviews might be a mixed bag, but the new Supergirl just got the ultimate seal of approval from DC royalty. Helen Slater, who famously brought Kara Zor-El to life in the original 1984 Supergirl movie, has shared her two cents on the new cinematic iteration—and she’s a massive fan of its new star.
Helen Slater on Supergirl
Slater made her feature-film debut in the ’80s adaptation, and, sadly, she knows a thing or two about tough box-office reception. However, despite the new film’s polarizing reviews, Slater had nothing but glowing praise for House of the Dragon alum Milly Alcock.
“I loved the new Supergirl film,” Slater told THR. “I thought Milly Alcock was astonishing — fierce, strong and great comic timing!“
Slater’s praise does align with the general consensus, as most have singled out Alcock’s performance as a positive. Hell, even Owen Gleiberman’s absolutely scathing review for Variety admits she’s “likable enough.“
The ’80s Supergirl Sequels That Never Happened
Looking back at her own tenure in the cape, Slater revealed she was originally signed to a three-film contract. Unfortunately, those sequels were grounded after the 1984 film underperformed.
“I know it didn’t do well because we didn’t make the second and third film,” Slater recalled.
The original film also famously missed out on a cameo from Christopher Reeve’s Superman, but Slater still walked away with a lifelong bond. “I became friends with him, and he was just the loveliest person on the planet,” Slater said. “There was no ill will or strangeness — just a sweet, very protective, mentor-y kind of person for me.”
All About Supergirl
Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, the film is based on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the comic series written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely. After her father is murdered and the one responsible is still out there, a young alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll seeks out Supergirl to help her on a vicious mission. She wants revenge, and if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it herself, whatever the cost.
Supergirl stars Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as Kara Zor-El, alongside Eve Ridley (3 Body Problem) as Ruthye, Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone) as Krem of the Yellow Hill, David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer) as Zor-El, Emily Beecham (1899) as Alura, and Jason Momoa as Lobo, a role he has longed to play for years.
