Cabin in the Woods almost got Left 4 Dead?

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

In yet another entry in the “awesome ideas that almost were” file, CABIN IN THE WOODS director Drew Goddard has revealed his movie nearly became fodder for LEFT 4 DEAD 2 downloadable content:

“We actually were going to do a downloadable L4D2 expansion pack, where you’d fight in the Cabin world, but then MGM went bankrupt so the delay squashed it. But the people at Valve were still cool enough to let us use some of their monsters to fill the cubes in the background (I had a lot of cubes to fill).”

Wha… this is just… I mean… that would have been… Oh, f*ck it. Words cannot describe this injustice to gamers and horror fans alike. Therefore, let’s just have Goddard tease us further:

“By the way – the game was gonna be amazing. You were gonna be able to play in both the upstairs Cabin in the Woods world and the downstairs ‘facility’ world with all the monsters. Believe me, I HATE all video games based on movies, they always suck, but porting Cabin into Left For Dead felt like the right fit. It pains me that it didn’t happen.”

“Pain” is the understatement of the century for the rest of us. Fear not, horror fans– CABIN IN THE WOODS is now available on DVD and Blu-ray. Scoop it up and the next time you watch it, close your eyes and imagine the video game tie-in that could have been. Then cry, because it’s a natural part of the grieving process.
