Guillermo del Toro talks monster mayhem on land and at sea in Pacific Rim

Last Updated on July 23, 2021

July 2013 can’t come soon enough as far as I’m concerned and I’m sure anyone who enjoys watching giant monsters beat the crap out of giant robots on screen would agree. If not, the brand new quotes from Guillermo del Toro, taken from the latest issue of Total Film, are sure to change your mind. Speaking to the mag, the director of the upcoming PACIFIC RIM provided some additional insight into the monster-sized flick. Here are some choice excerpts from the talk:

“We had a Tokyo scene that we shot here in Toronto. We had several Hong Kong scenes and a few scenes in Australia, through the television. We briefly see the kaiju take over San Francisco. The whole Pacific Rim needs a sense of danger.”

“We take the battles far and above! Two or three of them happen in places where there have never been a battle between kaiju and robots. From the bottom of the ocean to the atmosphere of the Earth. We have a battle in a storm at sea. Every battle we try to do differently. One is seen from the point of view of a single person. We never cut away from that point of view.”

Awesome. I personally can’t wait for the hype machine to start rolling on this one. PACIFIC RIM hits theaters on July 12, 2013, starring Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi (below), Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Clifton Collins and Rob Kazinsky.
