Monster Squad remake update from director Rob Cohen

Last Updated on July 23, 2021

The Platinum Dunes-ing of THE MONSTER SQUAD was announced back in March of 2010, but the project has been slow to move forward much ever since. Probably not heartbreaking to fans of the original cult classic.

Sitting in the director’s chair for the remake is Rob Cohen, who incidentally produced the 1987 Fred Dekker version. As a director, Cohen has given us such cinematic wonders as DRAGONHEART, THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS and xXx. Oh, and the Tyler Perry-led ALEX CROSS, which he’s out promoting now. Speaking with ComingSoon.net, Cohen dishes out a brief update on the status of MONSTER SQUAD:

“[The original] is one of the best things I’ve ever produced and I wanted to direct [the remake]… It’s sitting at Paramount. It’s a great script. I’ve been kicking them. Michael Bay has been kicking them. They don’t roll over… I don’t understand it. I’m hoping that one day we just get a call that they’ve finally seen the light of day.”

I must assume that’s encouraging news for the folks out there who aren’t anxious to see another one of their favorites sullied with a remake. However, it’s not dead, so don’t go throwing a monster party just yet…

Meanwhile, with this and TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES in trouble, Platinum Dunes appears to be having a run of bad luck lately…
