More casting for Preacher as W. Earl Brown enlists as Hugo Root

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Casting on AMC’s Preacher keeps chugging right along. A few days ago we received word Elizabeth Perkins had joined the cast as Vyla Quinncannon, the mother of main character Jesse Custer. Today it’s W. Earl Brown (SCREAM, Deadwood) being added to the ensemble.

Brown will play the villainous Hugo Root. Root is described (by Wikipedia) as the mean-hearted father of Arseface and a local sheriff. Root is an alcoholic and racist. The turning point in Root’s life comes after his first encounter with Jesse Custer and the Saint of Killers, which leaves his deputies dead and a helicopter downed. He is ridiculed for his story and eventually seeks out Custer.

Preacher focuses on…

Jesse Custer (Cooper), a conflicted preacher in a small Texas town who merges with a creature that has escaped from heaven and develops the ability to make anyone do anything he says. Along with his ex-girlfriend, Tulip (Ruth Negga), and an Irish vampire named Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), the three embark on a journey to literally find God.

Preacher stars Dominic Cooper, Lucy Griffiths, Joseph Gilgun, Ruth Negga and Ian Colletti; it’s expected to air on AMC in 2016.
