SPOILERS: M. Night Shyamalan & James McAvoy talk Split sequel

SPOILERS.

SPOILERS. SPOILERS.

SPOILERS. UNBREAKABLE. SPOILERS.

There, I did my part in keeping fresh eyes away from the awesomeness of what we are about to discuss. Now on to the good stuff. As many of you might know after this past weekend, M. Night Shyamalan's new flick SPLIT had a surprise ending slapped onto it (go figure). However this surprise ending wasn't lame, like, "it was all a dream", or "trees kill people." No. This ending was 100% pure bad ass. Let's set it up a bit…

Throughout the film James McAvoy's character has 23 personalities. Right. We know this. A 24th personality called "The Beast" is also lurking inside him. Great. We got it. So in the end McAvoy turns into The Beast (basically a human werewolf… I guess) and the girl from THE WITCH shoots him with a shotgun. Then… wait for it… he doesn't die. Why? Wait for it… because he is UNBREAKABLE!

I think…

Anyhow, cut to a diner where people are talking openly about this new villain and drawing comparisons to a old villain in a "wheelchair." Oh… Sh*t… Then Bruce fuc*ing Willis shows up and the whole film is revealed to really be a surprise sequel to UNBREAKABLE!!

Or is it…? Shyamalan recently spoke to Empire and this is what he had to say:

“However you want to look at it. Maybe it’s a new format – this movie, this movie and a final movie.”

Thanks for being vague… but interesting! Whatever we all choose to call the upcoming SPLIT 2, UNBREAKABLE 2 (maybe even UNBREAKABLE 3?) Shyamalan is totally getting ready for it. Here is what he told EMPIRE:

“I’m writing the outline now. It’s weird. It’s long. It’s the longest outline I’ve ever had. It has so many characters… I hope if Split is a success, I’ll have the opportunity to finish the story. I want to finish it, so this is the third one.”

Well no worries there, buddy! As we all know by now, SPLIT made a killing at the weekend box-office with over 40 million bucks. I'd say that can be labeled as the "success" he was hoping for. But again, as far as Shyamalan's comments go, all very interesting. However, it's SPLIT star James McAvoy's responses to the UNBREAKABLE connection that truly catch my attention:

“When I first read the script, it wasn’t there. There was some weird little allusion to the fact that it might be linked to Unbreakable, but it was so subtle I kinda discounted it. Then on the last day of rehearsals I was like, ‘mate, is this thing linked to that thing?’ It was honestly the most subtle thing you could ever have written. None but the greatest fanboy alive would ever have noticed it. So it went from being a tiny music cue to a whole full-blown scene with a major movie star in it.”

The major star McAvoy is referring to, if you live on another planet, is Bruce fuc*ing Willis. Here is what McAvoy had to say about his imagined clash with the titan of sad superheroes:

“When two baldies go to war. My money’s on B-Dog. I hope he lets me call him that.”

Hahaha. B-Dog. Poor McAvoy. He was having a good weekend until he said that. Now I imagine Bruce on a plane somewhere, steadily heading to James' house, patiently waiting to stomp his ass for a week straight. Oh well, maybe after that they can shake hands and get to making THE UNBREAKABLE HORDE. Good possible title, right? Nah. But we'll think of something.

"They call him Mr. Glass."
