Will there be a second season of Netflix’s Haunting of Hill House?

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Netflix and director Mike Flanagan's new masterpiece of TV The Haunting of Hill House has been gathering up fans left and right throughout the past week, and for good reason too. The series is legitimately one of the best things I've seen hit TV since BREAKING BAD and the first season of HBO's TRUE DETECTIVE. And if you've seen the series, then you'll know that this isn't hyperbole.

So with all of this love being thrown Flanagan's way what does the man think of a possible second season of the series? Well, the director just spoke with EW about all things haunted over at Hill House and dropped some interesting info on what season two might be.

Mike Flanagan on Season Two:

I don’t want to speculate too much about season two until Netflix and Amblin let us know if they want one. What I will say, though, is that as far as I’ve ever been concerned with this, the story of the Crain family is told. It’s done. I think that there are all sorts of different directions we could go in, with the house or with something completely different. I love the idea of an anthology as well. But to me, I felt like the Crains have been through enough, and we left them exactly as we all wanted to remember them, those of us who worked on it. We toyed with a cliffhanger ending and we toyed with other ideas, but ultimately, in the writers’ room and with the cast and everything else, we really felt like the story demanded a certain kind of closure from us and we were happy to close the book on that family.

He then added:

That said, I think more than anything, the show is about haunted places and haunted people, as Steve says, and there’s no shortage of either. So, there’s any number of things we could do, in or out of Hill House.

I'm a bit disappointed that the Cranes will not be featured in the series moving forward. But that said, I guess it makes sense that if the series adapts a horror anthology structure, then the Cranes could return later on in season 4 or something. I'd be fine with that. How about you? Let us know below!

The official synopsis for The Haunting of Hill House:

A modern reimagining of Shirley Jackson’s iconic novel, The Haunting of Hill House explores a group of siblings who, as children, grew up in what would go on to become the most famous haunted house in the country. Now adults, and forced back together in the face of tragedy, the family must finally confront the ghosts of their past — some of which still lurk in their minds while others may actually be stalking the shadows of Hill House.

Created, directed, and executive-produced by Mike Flanagan (GERALD'S GAME), The Haunting of Hill House is a complex family drama wrapped up in a chilling horror story which follows a group of siblings who grew up in the most famous haunted house in the country, and are forced to confront the ghosts of their past years later. The Haunting of Hill House is now available on Netflix RIGHT HERE.
