XX, an anthology directed entirely by women, gets a February release

XX Melanie Lynskey

Although the female-helmed anthology XX is a project we've been following for over three years, it's one we know very little about. The filmmakers have done quite well at keeping the contents of their segments under wraps - all we really know about the stories told within the film is that one of them is based on the Jack Ketchum short story The Box, which features a box with contents so disturbing that it kills the appetite of anyone who finds out what it is.

The segment based on The Box was directed by former Rue Morgue magazine editor Jovanka Vuckovic. The other segments were helmed by Karyn Kusama (JENNIFER'S BODY), Roxanne Benjamin (SOUTHBOUND), and musician Annie Clark, a.k.a. St. Vincent. The segments are linked together by sequences created by stop-motion animator Sofia Carrillo.

XX was picked up for distribution through Magnet Releasing two years ago, and the company has now announced that they will be releasing the film on February 17, 2017 - just a few weeks after it's scheduled to be shown at the Sundance Film Festival as part of their Midnight line-up.

The anthology's stars include Melanie Lynskey, Natalie Brown, Angela Trimbur, Mike Doyle, Christina Kirk, Kyle Allen, Peyton Kennedy, Peter DaCunha, Ron Lea, Jonathan Watton, Lisa Renee Pitts, and Morgan Peter Brown.

I may not know what XX's stories are about, but I know I want to see it, so I'm glad there are only a couple months left to wait.
