Interview: Leopard Skin star Carla Gugino and director Sebastian Gutierrez on their Peacock thriller series

One of the best feelings in the world is discovering a series or a movie that you didn’t know about and realizing how distinct it is from anything else out there. Since working at JoBlo.com, I have been lucky enough to come across several series that I enjoyed and got to tell you about them. Sometimes, I am lucky enough to talk to the talent involved about the project and how it came to be. Such is the case with the new Peacock series, Leopard Skin. After watching the excellent series Jett, creator/director Sebastian Gutierrez and star Carla Gugino were kind enough to let me know about their latest project, this half-hour crime series that debuted on Peacock recently (check out our review).

Leopard Skin can be categorized as a heist series, a thriller, a drama, or any number of labels but it thrives by not being locked down to one genre. With scenes that move back and forth through the timeline and an ensemble that features excellent performances from Carla Gugino (of course), Philip Winchester, Ana de la Reguera, Gaite Jansen, Amelia Eve, Gentry White, Nora Arnezeder, Margot Bingham and the great Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Leopard Skin is sexy without being reductive, intricate without being laborious, and just a fun and entertaining story that is as multi-faceted as the jewels stolen in the first episode.

Sebastian Gutierrez and Carla Gugino sat down with me to discuss Leopard Skin as well as how the story came about during the earliest days of the pandemic. We talked about the experience shooting in the beautiful house central to the plot as well as the cast who have featured in many of the pair’s prior films. We also talked about their careers in general including Carla’s frequent collaborators including Zack Snyder and Mike Flanagan. It was an extended conversation and a blast for me personally. You can check out the full interview in the embed above.

Leopard Skin is now streaming on Peacock.
