James Wan says Aquaman spinoff The Trench is a pure monster movie

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Now I'm more than aware that James Wan's recent mega-blockbuster AQUAMAN is by no stretch of the imagination a horror movie, but there is one sequence contained within that is pure THE CONJURING and INSIDIOUS James Wan working at what we will refer to here today as "Full-Tilt Wan."

And as some of you may know, Wan and the powers that be behind the scenes of the recent superhero movie are gearing up to make a spin-off centered on the evil sea creatures, THE TRENCH. And today Wan promises that his TRENCH movie will be more monster movie than superhero film.

Thank, God.

Specifically, Wan says:

We, you know, we're still deep in sort of crafting the script, crafting the story right now so I don't want to get into that too much, but definitely it's one that I really want to lean into the horror of it, so it's going to play more as a monster horror movie then it will as a superhero film, but it's still definitely part of the Aquaman world.

While Wan makes sure to point out that the spin-off will still be part of the AQUAMAN world, to this here horror fan, all I'm hearing is the promise of a Lovecraftian remake of a less-rapey HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP by way of THE FOG-era John Carpenter. I mean, can you imagine how badass THAT movie would be?! Again, I can only hope this is the course that Wan and company plan to take on this new aquatic adventure.

We'll make sure to keep up to date on THE TRENCH as it progresses and pass along word as we hear it. Until then remember that James Wan's AQUAMAN starring Jason Momoa, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, and Dolph f*cking Lundgren is now available on Blu-ray. Snag a copy over HERE.

This could be f*cking epic
