Jeremy Renner was willing to be recast as Hawkeye to spend time with his daughter

Jeremy Renner, Hawkeye, MCU, Marvel

Jeremy Renner has played Clint Barton aka Hawkeye since 2011’s Thor and he’s an original Avenger. This is a role that most actors would dream to keep but Renner was willing to give it all up if he couldn’t spend adequate time with his daughter.

During a chat with “Men’s Health“, Renner revealed that he approached negotiations with Marvel with his daughter in mind when it became clear that his demanding role as the archer saw him constantly flying back and forth between work and time with his little girl. It all worked out in the end but if they couldn’t agree on proper terms, Renner was willing to tell them to recast the part if it meant he couldn’t spend with his daughter:

“It taught me how to have the nuts to say, ‘Everyone, f**k off. It’s my time with my daughter’… I said, ‘Fine, recast me. I’m going to be here with my daughter.’ It was pretty gnarly. Acting and everything else goes out the window, until my daughter says, ‘I want to hang out with my friends, and I don’t want to be around you so much, Daddy.'”

That’s a pretty stand-up thing for Renner to do because I believe that some actors would care more about the big Marvel paycheck over family time but this shows what Renner’s priorities truly are. These are pretty formative years in his daughter’s life and he wants to be present for them. Playing Hawkeye definitely comes second when it comes to spending valuable time with his daughter.

Jeremy Renner began his run as Clint Barton/Hawkeye in 2011’s Thor in a brief cameo appearance that set up his larger role in the ensemble film, The Avengers. Renner has played the role several times since, last appearing in AVENGERS: ENDGAME. Hawkeye had his most significant character development during Avengers: Age of Ultron but it could be argued that he hasn’t really gotten his true moment to shine in the MCU. The upcoming Disney+ Hawkeye series will give the character the exposure he deserves.

The 6-episode Hawkeye series will debut its first two episodes on November 24, 2021, and will conclude on December 22, 2021.
