Back in October of 2020, we heard that The Picture Company and Assemble Media were going to produce an adaptation of the Devil’s Due comic book Mercy Sparx for MGM, with the project being described as the story of “a female Constantine“. At that time, Nick Shafir (R.I.P. Off) was working on the script. While the development of Mercy Sparx continues, Shafir is no longer writing it. Deadline reports that he has been replaced at the keyboard by Laura Kosann, who wrote and directed the 2019 mockumentary The Social Ones. She also had two scripts on the 2021 Black List, The Ideal Woman and From Little Acorns Grow, and co-founded the online lifestyle magazine / production company The New Potato.

Created by Josh Blaylock, the Mercy Sparx character made her comic book debut in 2008. She is

a female demon sent from Hell to Earth on a mission, which she must complete while hiding among humans. On Earth, Mercy has an existential crisis and begins to see the gray area between good and evil. It forces her to choose her place within it and compromises her mission.

I haven’t read the comics, but the set-up sounds promising. MGM is hoping Mercy Sparx will become a franchise for them.

The film is being produced by Jack Heller of Assemble, along with Alex Heineman and Andrew Rona of The Picture Company. Blaylock serves as executive producer with Assemble’s Scott Veltri.

There’s no word on whether or not Mercy Sparx will be going into production any time soon (or if Kosann will be directing the film when it does), but we’ll keep you updated on this project as it continues to move forward.
