1st look at Denzel Washington in Antoine Fuqua’s adaptation of The Equalizer

Based on the ’80’s TV show, THE EQUALIZER has gone through quite a few hands before settling on its final creative team. Nicholas Winding Refn was set to direct for a time, then RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES helmer Ruper Wyatt was in the mix, before the film nabbed ANTOINE FUQUA (TRAINING DAY, OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN) with Denzel Washington in the lead (at one time, Russell Crowe was also a contender). Now in post production, the film co-stars Chloe Moretz, Melissa Leo, Marton Csokas, and Vladimir Kulich with a plot that fits the original show’s set up and today we have a peek at Washington in character.

Take a look:

“…a focus on veteran covert operative McCall, a man seeking redemption for his past dark deeds in carrying out ruthless missions on behalf of the US government. He’s now offering his skills to those in desperate need as a classified advertisement in the local newspaper – “Got a problem? Odds against you? Call The Equalizer.”

I’ve never seen the show so can’t speak to whether or not this is a good/bad situation, but I am a fan of Fuqua and Washington, who both deliver solid entertainment more often than not. The last time the two got together Denzel won an Oscar, so this repairing can’t hurt. Fuqua’s recent OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN was cheesy fare, but still a lot of fun. The same goes for Washington’s latest, 2 GUNS, which was a surprisingly good time. THE EQUALIZER looks like something that will likely swim in the same vein and I’m cool with that.

THE EQUALIZER offers up its skills on September 26, 2014.
