A Roger Rabbit sequel script exists, but Zemeckis doubts Disney's interest

Dear friends, I feel that it's my duty to inform you that what I'm about to report may shock and disturb you. It's the sort of news that, upon hearing it, you could find yourself flying into a rage at the thought of a studio sitting on a perfectly good idea. Okay, here we go. Don't say that I didn't warn you.

Recently, BACK TO THE FUTURE and DEATH BECOMES HER director Robert Zemeckis sat down for a fireside chat with Yahoo! to speak about his new film WELCOME TO MARWEN. While chin-wagging with the entertainment outlet about the meticulous process of filming the biographical comedy starring Steve Carrell, the discussion eventually turned toward some of Zemeckis' other films. It was then that the filmmaker's pièce de résistance, WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT, entered the conversation.

You see, this year marks the 30th anniversary of Zemeckis' noir love letter to the animation medium, so naturally, Yahoo! inquired about the possibility of there ever being a sequel. Yeah, this is the part of the article that may cause you to Hulk out. My advise is to grab an extra pair of purple pants and think about the sun getting real low before you read on.

When asked if he could ever see there being room for a sequel to WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT, Zemeckis told Yahoo!, "I don’t think so. I don’t know where it fits in in their universe. There’s no princess in it, so I don’t know where that would be. There’s a wonderful script sitting at Disney that is really good, but I don’t think it’s on their radar."

Let me break it down for you, even though Zemeckis made himself quite clear. At this point in time, there exists a "really good" script for a WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT sequel ... and it's not getting made! This is why we can't have nice things. I mean, who wouldn't want to see another film starring characters the likes of Roger, Jessica Rabbit, Baby Herman, and damn near every animated Warner Bros. character under that big, singing Toon Town sun? Here, I'll write the film for you right now: Roger and Jessica join forces with the son of Eddie Valiant, upon discovering a studio-wide conspiracy to erase hand-drawn toons from our reality. Done. You can even mass produce Benny the Cab plushies and sell them at the Disney Store. Cha-ching!

Anyway, this is the part where I invite you to leave your thoughts in the comments section below, and I want to see some Roger Rabbit love, dammit! Rage with me! Tell us why you think there should or shouldn't be a sequel to one of the best live-action/CGI hybrid films ever.

WELCOME TO MARWEN is now playing in theaters.
