Adam Sandler to play Andy Samberg’s dad in upcoming comedy

SNL stars past and present Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg have signed on to star in the upcoming comedy I HATE YOU DAD, which would star Sandler as Samberg’s rather difficult father. As Samberg prepares to get married, dad causes nothing but problems for the bride-to-be.

Sandler bought the rights to the script, originally written by David Caspe, and had David Wain and Ken Marino (ROLE MODELS) work on a rewrite. Currently there’s no director attached but if Sandler’s smart, he’ll avoid his usual crew of capable but limited directors like Frank Coraci and Dennis Dugan and have Samberg bring in some of the Lonely Island crew (neither Akiva Shaffer nor Jorma Taccone have directed a film since their debuts, HOT ROD and MACGRUBER, respectively).

Frankly I’m a little surprised that Samberg and Sandler, who have somewhat similar comedic sensibilities, have taken this long to spark to a project together. While I’ve grown tired of Sandler’s comedies lately (FUNNY PEOPLE being the exception to that rule), I think Samberg has a ton of untaped potential (HOT ROD being the exception to that rule as is tapped into all of his potential and made it one of the most underrated comedies of the last decade).

Sandler recently wrapped JACK AND JILL, a comedy where he’ll dress up in drag (…..), while Samberg can be seen next in FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS.
