Dinosaurs stomp into our world in Jurassic World short Battle at Big Rock

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Last week we got the first tease for a surprise new short set in the JURASSIC universe – BATTLE AT BIG ROCK. The short directed by JURASSIC WORLD’s Colin Trevorrow (1 & 3), written by himself and Emily Carmichael (JW3), and starring Andre Holland and Natalie Martinez debuted last night exclusively on FX. For anyone waiting for it to drop online you can now get in on the dino action, which takes place after the events of FALLEN KINGDOM with the big creatures living amongst us humans – and spoiler alert – they do not make great roommates.

Just over eight and half minutes, the short centers on what Trevorrow said last week was the first major encounter between the humans and dinosaurs – taking place one year after KINGDOM. Anyone who has seen a JURASSIC movie can fill in the blanks as to what that entails, i.e. a big dino chomping at screaming humans. The latter is a new family headed by Holland and Martinez’s characters, who just wanted to have a nice camping trip, connect, and maybe shoot a crossbow or two.

The short essentially plays out like a big action scene from any of the other movies, using it as a way to bring a family together through a shared crisis involving one nasty meat-eater, and on that front, it's pretty entertaining. There's some solid suspense, cool dino v. dino action, and a sweet family dynamic that gives it all a grounded feel. The antagonist was the intimidating Allosaurus, which Trevorrow teased in an interview last week would be among the dinosaurs that would be making their debut in the series, and it certainly left its mark. Also making their debut was the peaceful dino, the Nasutoceratops, and the baby of the three almost being eaten will certainly get the biggest reaction from viewers.

Come the third movie we will see all the dinosaurs making their marks after being unleashed into the real world, and the final montage of home video-style encounters was a funny (and slightly dark) way of showing how these massive creatures are impacting the everyday lives of people just trying to drive to work or hang out in the park. Sounds like a more interesting world than the one we live in now, at least.

No word if more shorts will come before JURASSIC WORLD 3 arrives two years from now, but if not, the next entry is set for June 11, 2021.
