Int: Disney’s Safety & Reginald Hudlin on Static Shock and Chadwick Boseman

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Somewhat lost among all of the huge movies making their streaming debut over the holiday season is a little inspirational sports biopic that's coming out today courtesy of Disney+ called Safety. Starring newcomer Jay Reeves as Ray McElrathbey, a college football player who put his career and scholarship on the line to be his younger brother's guardian, this is very much in the mold of other inspirational Disney classics, like Remember the Titans, Glory Days, and more.

I had a great time talking to director Reginald Hudlin, who's had a legendary career behind the camera, starting with Eddie Murphy's Boomerang, right through to Chadwick Boseman's iconic turn in Marshall. Hudlin had a lot to say about his late, great leading man, Boseman, as well as his love of superheroes, his forthcoming Static Shock movie and, of course, Safety and its debut on streaming. Check it out above!

Safety is definitey grounded by a strong, starring role for Jay Reeves, who seems like a future movie star to me. Check out my interview with the engaging Reeves, who talks about training for the part and his undying love for The Mandalorian!

Safety is now available on Disney+ and is a great watch for the whole family.
