First poster for The Grudge teases plenty of terrifying hair

The upcoming new entry in the GRUDGE horror series, simply titled THE GRUDGE, will try to bring some much-needed terror back to the series, and perhaps it will do so by recalling some classic, freaky elements. Anyone familiar with Japanese horror flicks and the many American remakes knows to fear long mops of wet, black hair, and on the new poster for the new movie we see that terrifying image taking center stage in the one place you never want to be caught fighting off an evil spirit…at least not when you’re shampooing.

The new teaser poster is simple and does the job of recalling the familiar brand of terror that defined the most popular of J-horror movies, namely JU-ON/THE GRUDGE and RINGU/THE RING, fit with a little blood to push that more grisly vibe. The director, Nicolas Pesce, talked about taking the “more f**cked up” approach while trying to stay true to what fans of these types of movies find scary, and even referenced a certain horror scene in the shower.

Where there's a new poster there's a trailer, so with the movie coming out in a few months, the first trailer should be arriving rather soon. Perhaps the “evil spirit girl with long wet, black hair” angle may not work for a lot of people anymore, but perhaps there’s room for some fresh scares in there that double as a reminder about what we found so terrifying with the angle to begin with. We won’t know if there’s new life in THE GRUDGE or if these kinds of movies should stay dead and buried until the movie comes out in January, but here's to hoping for some nightmares to bring in the new decade!

THE GRUDGE stars Andrea Riseborough, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin, Lin Shaye, and Jacki Weaver and is in theaters January 3, 2020.
