Legendary CEO on why Duncan Jones’ Warcraft was pushed back to 2016

No explanation was given as to why Duncan Jones' "World of Warcraft" adaptation WARCRAFT was pushed back from December 2015 to March 2016 last year, but it wasn't really needed since a little movie you may have heard of called STAR WARS: EPISODE VII is also scheduled to open on December 18th.

In an interview with Crave, Legendary CEO Thomas Tull doesn't exactly say the new STAR WARS movie opening on the same day as their film is why the release date for WARCRAFT was pushed back, however Tull does say they wanted to get the right date for the adaptation since there are several huge films hitting theaters in the next two years. Tull also says it will give them more time to work on the project.

Well, part of it is getting the date right. As you may have noticed, these next two years, there’s pretty big titles coming out. We wanted to make sure that we got that right, but there are some sequences and some things that Duncan Jones has done that are truly on the cutting edge. You want to have plenty of time to make sure that we dial those in. So by the time they get home and set up, it’ll be a little less than two years. It’ll be about 20 months but we really want to take our time and get this right because the technology that’s employed really is some next generation stuff.

Many who aren't fans of the video game are interested in WARCRAFT because MOON and SOURCE CODE director Duncan Jones is behind the camera for the project. Both films are definitely a bit of a mindf*ck, and Thomas Tull was asked if WARCRAFT will be like the director's previous movies.

I would say it’s a linear story, but at the same time, it’s Duncan Jones. That’s what we wanted, was again that different flare, not just straightforward fantasy and everything. Look, it’s a privilege. Being able to go from Interstellar’s our fifth movie with Chris Nolan into Guillermo del Toro and Gareth Edwards and now Duncan Jones. It’s really a privilege to work around these folks.

It sucks we are going to have to wait so long for WARCRAFT, but it sounds like it was moved back for the right reasons. Very curious to see what Duncan Jones will do with WARCRAFT, and how fans and non-fans will react to the film. It's going to be a while before we even see a trailer for Jones' new movie, but I get the feeling once it does land, there's going to be a hell of a lot more interest in WARCRAFT.

WARCRAFT starring Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, Clancy Brown, Daniel Wu, Paula Patton, Rob Kazinsky, Ryan Robbins and Toby Kebbell will be in theaters on March 11th, 2016.
