Magnolia picks up Kevin MacDonald’s Bob Marley doc

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Magnolia Pictures has just sent word that they’ve acquired US rights to MARLEY, the new documentary about the legendary Bob Marley. Directed by Acadamy Award-winner Kevin MacDonald (THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND, TOUCHING THE VOID) and executive produced by  Marley’s son Ziggy Marley and Island Records founder Chris Blackwell; Steve Bing (Shangri-La Entertainment) and Charles Steel produce.

The film seeks to tell the definitive life story of the legend, spanning his whole life on the way from childhood to worldwide fame. Support of the family means that they’ve got all sorts of unreleased and rare footage, photos, and interviews with people close to him.

“Bob Marley is a fascinating, towering figure in musical history, and MARLEY is the biography that he deserves,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “Kevin Macdonald has once again shown himself to be a master documentarian with this eye-opening, entertaining, beautifully crafted film.”

“This documentary is the ultimate revelation of my father’s life,” said Executive Producer Ziggy Marley. “The family is proud to be able to have the world finally experience this emotional journey.”

MARLEY will open in theaters on April 20th (HAH!), hitting VOD and digital platforms the same day.

Can’t wait for this- MacDonald has a ton of great documentaries under his belt and Bob Marley certainly is a fascinating figure- plus you just know that the soundtrack’s going to be amazing. MARLEY will premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival and have its North American premiere at SXSW in March.
