New details on the Han Solo and Josh Trank-less Star Wars Anthology movies

In addition to their feelings at getting Harrison Ford back as Han Solo for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, Entertainment Weekly was able to probe Kathleen Kennedy and Lawrence Kasdan for more details surrounding the STAR WARS ANTHOLOGY films that are in development. While Gareth Edwards' ROGUE ONE is currently in production, the details are still sparse on the Han Solo origin film as well as the movie that was going to be helmed by Josh Trank.

Kathleen Kennedy on why they are making a Han Solo film.

“There’s got to be a reason for [the stand-alone film] to be. And obviously the thing that Star Wars has always done so well is it doesn’t spend a lot of time [explaining] the stories that have come before. We don’t want to do that either. We don’t want to spend time going back and answering a lot of questions that, quite frankly, I don’t think people want answered.”

How old will Han be in the film?

“He’ll definitely be probably in the high teens, low 20s,” Kennedy says. “We’re not introducing you to a 10-year-old Han Solo.”

Kennedy also went into the fact that we may see characters like Greedo and Chewbacca in the film as well as the fact that it will be funny. The choice of 21 JUMP STREET directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller should have cemented that this movie will feature the smart-ass character we have come to know and love.

With the Han Solo film being announced, Kennedy also shed some light as to where things stand with the film Josh Trank was set to direct. With the Han Solo film sliding into that movie's original 2018 date, the film Trank was developing is now looking likely to be the third film, debuting in 2020, a year after EPISODE IX.

“It’s still one of the stories that we absolutely want to tell,” she says. “There is a lot of innovative technology in and around what it is we’re doing with that story, so for a lot of reasons, we were comfortable postponing that. But we’re definitely still developing it.”

What that film could be is still a mystery (some sources claim it is about Boba Fett) but from the fact it will require innovative technology could mean that it is unlike anything we have seen so far.. Here's hoping that whoever takes it over is more adept at working with others than Trank was.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS opens on December 18th. STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE debuts on December 16, 2016. STAR WARS: HAN SOLO opens May 25, 2018.
