Nicolas Cage, Steve Carell, and Jack Black may be joining Charlie Kaufman’s Frank or Francis

With Comic Con in full swing, movie news outside of the Geek Mecca has been relatively quiet. But today, Variety is reporting on some potentially great casting involving writer-director Charlie Kaufman’s upcoming musical satire.

Steve Carell (CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE.), Jack Black (BERNIE), and Kaufman alum Nicolas Cage (DRIVE ANGRY) have all become attached to the inventive filmmaker’s latest, FRANK OR FRANCIS. While plot specifics have been kept under wraps, it’s said the musical will be about “an auteur director named Frank who clashes with an online blogger named Francis.” No word yet on which parts these three are specifically up for (though I can’t imagine Jack Black not playing the angry blogger). Months ago, it was said that Meryl Streep was reportedly interested in one of the film’s roles as well, though there’s been no further update as to whether or not she’s become attached.

FRANK OR FRANCIS will begin production this coming January. Meanwhile, Kaufman’s still got the his yet-to-be-titled collaboration with Spike Jonze brewing on the side, which recently attached Joaquin Phoenix.
