Our Friend trailer unveils drama starring Jason Segel, Dakota Johnson

Gravitas Ventures & Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has released the first trailer for the bittersweet drama, OUR FRIEND, and it looks like we may need to prepare to ugly when the releases on PVOD on January 22, 2021.

The film stars Jason Segel, Dakota Johnson, and Casey Affleck and is based on the Esquire article "The Friend: Love is Not a Big Enough Word" by Matt Teague. Affleck portrays Teague in the film and Johnson plays his wife Nicole. Their lives are turned upside down when the weight of Nicole's tragic cancer diagnosis begins to weigh heavily on the couple. The pair is struggling to raise two young daughters in the face of Nicole's impending death. In order to lighten the load, the couple's friend Dane (Jason Segel) offers to move in and help with the kids and generally doing whatever he can to make Matt and Nicole's burden easier to bear. Dane's stay is initially intended to be temporary, but he ends up casting aside his other responsibilities and relationships to be there for his friends until the bitter end. Talk about true friendship.

Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, the film originally premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2019 and our very own Chris Bumbray reviewed the film at the time and said the movie was on a "preciously short list of good, solid tear-jerkers." When these films are done right and simply don't manipulate your emotions to get a good cry out of you, they really can resonate. It looks like OUR FRIEND is one of those films.
