Sam Raimi is no longer directing the World of Warcraft movie

Okay, World of Warcraft fans, I have good news and I have bad news. The good news is production is moving forward on the movie version of the beloved video game. The bad news is that Sam Raimi will no longer be directing it.

At his Comic Con panel for OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL, Raimi was asked about the status of the WoW movie. His answer was “Actually, they don’t have me directing World of Warcraft anymore because when I took the Oz job, they had to move on to another director. They had to start making it.”

These things happen all the time, just ask Guillermo Del Toro. Sometimes a director has to commit to one project at the expense of another. In this case, it looks like OZ may be a potential new franchise for Raimi and one that he has more control over. World of Warcraft is a very defined universe with not much wiggle room to change how it operates.

Blizzard Entertainment has not issued any statements that name a new director or even that Raimi is off the project. I doubt the SPIDER-MAN director would be lying about leaving the movie, so we may hear more soon. If Raimi is right and Blizzard is beginning to move forward, a director will be the first priority on the list.

Who would you like to see take over as director on the World of Warcraft movie?
