Supermax bought

Updated: Come hear a strange tale of two projects, one called SUPER MAX, the other SUPERMAX. Note the space.

The first SUPER MAX you probably know. It’s a script written by David Goyer and Justin Marks which chronicles the imprisonment of Green Arrow in a facility meant to hold supervillians. We all want to see it come to life, and it’s what you were probably hoping to read about when you saw this headline.

But no, this article is about SUPERMAX (no space). It’s separate script penned by Christopher Allen Nelson and Mitch Rouse that Sony’s Columbia Pictures just bought for six figures, according to Bloody Disgusting. But the craziest part? Read the synopsis:

“Supermax” takes place in a Maximum Security Prison for the Super-Natural as a skilled guard must join forces with a lethal inmate after a riot ensues in order to fight his way through various monsters and mad-men in order to survive.”

These are in fact two separate movies that we’re told have nothing to do with each other, despite the name and plot points. There’s a remote possibility that I could believe this is blind coincidence, but I’m going to start taking bets on how long it will take for someone to start shouting “lawsuit.”

So this is the question I pose to you, three words, three letters. WTF?

Supermax bought!

I have good news and I have bad news. Which do you want first?

The good news is that Sony’s Columbia Pictures has just paid six figures for Christopher Allen Nelson and Mitch Rouse’s SUPERMAX script, which as you may recall follows the imprisonment of the Green Arrow and his subsequent escape and dealings with the other superpowered inmates.

The bad news? That whole Green Arrow part? That might be gone. Behold the new synopsis:

“Supermax” takes place in a Maximum Security Prison for the Super-Natural as a skilled guard must join forces with a lethal inmate after a riot ensues in order to fight his way through various monsters and mad-men in order to survive.”

So uh, what? This news comes from Bloody Disgusting, but they make no mention of why Green Arrow is MIA (or even that he’s MIA in the first place), and they’re also calling it a “spec horror script” now. What exactly happened here? Was it something with the license? Did the studio think Green Arrow wouldn’t be a recognizable enough lead? I can’t really envision an explanation for this that makes a whole lot of sense.

In any case, it’s still good that the project has been officially picked up, and there’s no reason to think Green Arrow might not show up again. Stay tuned for more details on this rather odd development.
