Three contenders for Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy and yet another contender for the lead role

The news surrounding GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY has been so focused on the casting of the lead role for so long I was beginning to assume the rest of the cast would be computer generated. But, today comes news that three actors are being considered for the supporting role of Drax the Destroyer.

Here is the breakdown on Drax: Arthur Douglas was a human whose family was attacked and killed by the supervillain Thanos. Needing a champion to combat Thanos, the being known as Kronos took Arthur’s spirit and placed it in a powerful new body, and Drax the Destroyer was born. Drax’s powers included enhanced strength and resilience, flight, and the ability to project energy blasts from his hands.

The three being considered for the role are Isaiah Mustafa (the Old Spice Guy), David Bautista (WWE wrestler, THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS), and Brian Patrick wade (THE GUARDIAN). None of these guys are exactly master thespians. Hell, two of them are barely actors. But, they do meet the physical requirements of the role. It seems that where THE AVENGERS was bringing together a top-notch cast, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is banking on a group of unknowns to be led by one big star.

Speaking of big stars, it appears that some more names are entering the mix for the Peter Quill role. At this point, it seems kind of ridiculous to even call these actors candidates as the list has grown to encompass pretty much every young Caucasian male in Hollywood.

PROMISED LAND screenwriter/actor and star of NBC’s “The Office”, John Krasinski, is the latest addition to the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY most wanted list. The man who was once in the running for Captain America is the least traditional candidate so far. ComicBookMovie is also reporting on a rumor that a “former Superman” is also in the running, which could mean Brandon Routh, Tom Welling, or maybe even Dean Cain. Okay, probably not Cain.

I just want them to pick someone at this point. The list can no longer be called a shortlist and they just keep adding wildly different names. This worries me that Marvel has no clue what direction they want to go in and the clock to production is ticking quickly.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY will open (if they ever cast anyone) on August 1, 2014.
