Warner Bros. developing an Aquaman spin-off featuring The Trench

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

As AQUAMAN has quickly become the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros.' DC franchise, it should come as no surprise that they'd want more. As we know, an AQUAMAN sequel is officially in the early stages, but there's also been discussions of an AQUAMAN spin-off as well.

THR has reported that Warner Bros. have tasked up-and-coming screenwriters Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald with penning THE TRENCH, a horror-infused project which will center around the terrifying amphibious creatures who were seen attacking Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Mera (Amber Heard) in AQUAMAN. James Wan and Peter Safran will produce the project and it's been said that the spin-off will be budgeted much more modestly than past DC superhero films, which could prove to be an interesting avenue for future DC films which may normally have not gotten made. There are few details about THE TRENCH at this early stage, only that it will be set in the Kingdom of the Trench and will not feature the main cast of AQUAMAN. Although much different in appearance, the Trench were actually part of the Kingdom of Atlantis but were cut off from their brethren after the sinking of the ancient city and evolved into the ravenous monsters seen in AQUAMAN.

As for the AQUAMAN sequel, it seems that James Wan is in no hurry to launch back into the world of Atlantis as he'll be taking a much-needed break. Studio sources have said that the studio will likely need a "whale-sized deal" in order to lock Wan down for the sequel, but that he's not about to sign on the dotted line until he's happy with the script. AQUAMAN will be released on Digital on March 5, 2019, followed by a DVD/Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD release on March 24, 2019.
