What would Ghostbusters 3 be without Bill Murray?

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

One of the biggest hurdles in getting GHOSTBUSTERS 3 made has been Bill Murray. He just doesn’t want to do it, and can you blame him, really? Just a couple of months ago Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd sent him the latest script, which was allegedly shredded by Murray and returned with a note that said “No one wants to pay money to see fat, old men chasing ghosts!”

But Aykroyd has denied that this happened in an interview with Empire.

“Bill Murray is not capable of such behaviour. This is simply something that would not be in his nature. We have a deep, private personal relationship that transcends business. We communicate frequently and his position on the involvement in GHOSTBUSTERS 3 has been made clear and I respect that. But Bill has too much positive estimation of my writing skills to shred the work.”

But what are their options, then? Well, one of them is to recast Peter Venkman. Empire hints that there may be a “Jack Ryan”-style recasting. I can’t imagine this going over well with the fanbase.

Another casting issue is of course Rick Moranis, who has been in self-imposed exile from the film industry for the last 15 years.

“If we can get the script to GHOSTBUSTERS 3 right, then it would definitely have Moranis as a major component. None of us would want to do the movie without having him as a participant,” said Aykroyd.

More as we hear it, but I have the feeling that this project is going to keep spinning its wheels for many more years to come.
