Another Suicide Squad spinoff in development; More Peacemaker looks likely

Suicide Squad spinoff, Peacemaker, James Gunn

According to James Gunn, another Suicide Squad spinoff is being developed at HBO Max.

“We’re working on something else now, another TV show that’s connected to that universe,” Gunn told us, “I can’t quite say,” Gunn revealed on an upcoming episode of Deadline‘s Hero Nation.

In addition, Gunn said that things are looking good for the second season of Peacemaker, starring John Cena as the helmet-headed anti-hero with a hard-on for justice. “There’s a really good chance of that,” Gunn told the outlet. “We’re the biggest show in the world right now,” Gunn continued.

Sources indicate that ideas for another Suicide Squad spinoff are in the early stages of development. While it has been said that the second spinoff would revolve around a character featured in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, their identity has yet to be revealed. Moreover, nothing has been written or greenlit, but HBO Max is said to be picking up what Gunn is putting down.

While characters like Idris Elba’s Bloodsport and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn are arguably the most recognizable figures from The Suicide Squad, their schedules are jam-packed, leaving little room to film a television show. Things could change, of course, though the tea leaves say their involvement is unlikely.

When asked if the series involves Peter Capaldi’s Thinker, Gunn simply laughed and said “I can’t say anything. It is connected to this universe, and I don’t think it will be the same genre as Peacemaker; it won’t be as much a  comedy as Peacemaker, but it will be in the same universe.”

When asked about there being a Peacemaker Season 2, Gunn replied, “The show is doing extraordinarily well, and we’re excited, we all like doing it, we just need to crossed some ‘T’s and dot some ‘I’s, which is basically me.”

When the conversation turned toward The Suicide Squad‘s day-and-date performance, Gunn admitted that the release was not without its share of problems. “It’s been borne out that things didn’t work the best, but I have to say that process is working out incredibly well for me because of Peacemaker, Gunn confessed.

“I wasn’t happy about Suicide Squad going to TV day and date, we also happened to come out at the absolute peak of Delta, so it was a difficult decision,” he added.

“For the sake of Peacemaker, I’m really glad: It got more subscribers for HBO, billions of people say it on HBO; for Peacemaker, it worked out really well,” said Gunn about Suicide Squad.

What do you think about there being another Suicide Squad spinoff series? Which character would you like to see get their own show? My vote is for Daniela Melchior’s Ratcatcher 2, but I’d also be down for a limited series featuring King Shark’s undersea adventures. Are you excited by the prospect of their being more Peacemaker?
