Superman: Legacy: James Gunn says it won’t be a comedy and will respect the previous movies

James Gunn says that the upcoming Superman: Legacy won’t be a comedy and will respect the previous Superman movies.

Last week marked the first official day of pre-production for Superman: Legacy, which will usher in a new era of the DC Universe. James Gunn will write and direct Superman: Legacy, and unlike some of the other characters the Guardians of the Galaxy director has tackled… Superman is perhaps one of the most iconic superheroes in the world.

The scale of the responsibility of delivering a fresh take on Superman is immense, which is partly why James Gunn initially turned down the gig several years ago. “It’s easier to take a character nobody knows, like the Guardians, or Peacemaker, and then do whatever you want with them,” Gunn told THR. “People in every single country in the world know the story of Superman.” Gunn said that his take on the Man of Steel won’t be quite as comedic as his previous movies, as he’s setting out to make a sincere superhero story.

How can I make it different from the Superman movies that have been made so far, but also have it respect all the Superman movies that have been made so far?” Gunn added. “So it just took me some time to try to figure it out.” The director has previously stated that Superman: Legacy will be “quite different” from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

Co-chair of DC Studios Peter Safran has teased that Superman: Legacy will not be an origin story and will focus on “Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.” While fans were obviously disappointed when Henry Cavill was dismissed from the role, I am excited to see what James Gunn will bring to Superman: Legacy. We still have a ways to go as the movie won’t be released until July 11, 2025.

James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters on May 5th, bringing his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to an end. First reactions to the threequel have called it the best MCU movie since Avengers: Endgame, but we won’t have long to wait to find out for ourselves.
