The Queen’s Gambit became one of Netflix’s biggest limited-series upon its release, so naturally, there was talk of a second season almost immediately. Anya Taylor-Joy, who starred in the series, got fans talking earlier today when she tweeted: “The Queen’s Gambit season 2,” but the post was taken down after ten minutes and the actress confirmed on Instagram that she had been hacked.

For those ten minutes, fans were excited about entering the world of chess once again, but it seems that The Queen’s Gambit won’t be returning for a second season. “My Twitter has been hacked,” Anya Taylor-Joy wrote on Instagram. “Apologies for all inconveniences. It’s not me!” Based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Walter Tevis, The Queen’s Gambit followed Elizabeth Harmon, an orphaned chess prodigy who becomes an elite player while struggling with emotional problems, drugs, and alcohol dependency. The series went on to win eleven Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.

As I mentioned above, The Queen’s Gambit became Netflix’s “biggest scripted limited series to date” with a “record-setting 62 million households” watching in the series’ first 28 days. Netflix’s VP of Original Series, Peter Friedlander, said, “Three years ago when Scott Frank (Godless) first approached us about adapting The Queen’s Gambit – Walter Tevis’ 1983 book about a young chess prodigy – we felt it was a compelling tale. Beth is an underdog who faces addiction, loss, and abandonment. Her success – against the odds- speaks to the importance of perseverance, family, and finding, and staying true to, yourself. However, I don’t think any of us could have predicted that The Queen’s Gambit – and the extraordinary Anya Taylor-Joy – would become the global phenomena they are today or our biggest limited scripted series ever.

Although The Queen’s Gambit was always intended to be a limited-series, Anya Taylor-Joy has said that she would be open to return for more. “Maybe. Not to disappoint anybody, but we just never thought about it. It was always a sapling to tree transition,” Taylor-Joy said. “You see her grow, you leave her in a good place. So we were genuinely surprised when people were like, “Where’s season 2?” That being said, I adore the entire team that made it and I would jump at the chance to work with them again.” She later told Deadline that, “It would be very interesting to see how Beth would be as a mother, now that she’s sober and more cognizant of the demons that pull her down.

While it may not seem likely, would you like to see The Queen’s Gambit season 2?
