Trailer, poster for Chris Rock and Darren Lynn Bousman’s Saw spinoff Spiral

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

The SAW franchise expansion that star Chris Rock and director Darren Lynn Bousman have been working on has been shrouded in secrecy ever since it was first announced. It hasn't even been clear what the title would be. SAW 9? THE ORGAN DONOR? SPIRAL? Now that we're just a few months out from the release date, a trailer has arrived online to let us know what we're dealing with.

SPIRAL: FROM THE BOOK OF SAW it is.

Rock pitched the story idea for this one to Lionsgate, and his idea was then fleshed out into a screenplay by JIGSAW writers Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg. Bousman, who previously directed SAW IIIII, and IV, takes the helm of a film that

reimagines and spins off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer … This upcoming film will still be as mind bending and intense as all the previous SAW films. Chris conceived this idea and it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision and passion for this classic horror franchise."

Rock's character is "a police detective investigating a series of grizzly crimes", and he's joined in the cast by Samuel L. Jackson as his character's father, Nazneen Contractor as a coroner who works closely with him, Max Minghella as his partner William Schenk, and Marisol Nichols as his boss, Captain Angie Garza.

The film is set to reach theatres on May 15th.

Check out the trailer and see what you think of the "fantastic vision" (according to Lionsgate Chairman Joe Drake) that Rock has brought to the SAW series.
