Universal Campaigns for Acting Categories

It’s still early, but seeing as how Christopher Nolan‘s film Oppenheimer cleaned up at the Academy Awards, Universal is ready to do some campaigning for the director’s latest box office juggernaut The Odyssey. While Oppenheimer had its fair share of success at the Oscars, The Odyssey may try to catch Ryan Coogler’s Sinners for its all-time nomination record. In order for the epic to tie Coogler’s film, the studio needs to garner multiple acting nominations. Thus begins the push for the cast to be considered in various acting categories.

According to Gold Derby, Universal had to make careful decisions on who they should campaign for when their golden film of the year features an all-star cast of heavy-hitters in their ensemble. The campaign for the Best Picture and Director categories are no-brainers, but beyond Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland, who will Universal prop up for the acting spotlight at the big industry event?

The Confirmed List

Gold Derby has confirmed the list of actors that Universal will submit for acting considerations from The Odyssey. Damon is naturally being submitted for the Best Actor category. Meanwhile, Anne Hathaway and Samantha Morton are both competing for Best Supporting Actress. And finally, Tom Holland, John Leguizamo and Robert Pattinson are all being submitted for the Best Supporting Actor category.

This leaves out  Zendaya (Athena), Charlize Theron (Calypso), Lupita Nyong’o (Helen of Troy/Clytemnestra), Jon Bernthal (Menelaus), Elliot Page (Sinon), and Himesh Patel (Eurylochus), most of whom were likely not substantial enough in the film to secure any acting consideration.

The choice to put Hathaway in the Best Supporting Actress category is said to be a strategic movie on Universal’s part to increase her odds and keep her from competing with Julianne Moore’s Best Actress hype for her performance in The Debut.

Nolan’s Epic at Home

The Odyssey has earned roughly $1.55 billion worldwide, making it Nolan’s highest-grossing movie to date. A portion of that total is thanks to IMAX screenings, which account for $257 million in ticket sales. If you’re keeping score, this total also makes it the highest-grossing IMAX film ever. The movie will be available to rent and purchase on digital on November 17, 2026. If you want a physical copy, you can purchase The Odyssey on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray the same day.
