Will Smith goes from super spy to trash bird in Spies in Disguise trailer

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Just think about it: One moment you’re Lance Sterling, the world’s greatest, slickest spy who makes James Bond look like Dale from Analytics, but then you seek the help of a young whiz kid, and all of a sudden, you’re *record scratch* a pigeon?! That’s exactly what happens to Will Smith’s Sterling in 20th Century Fox/Blue Sky Studios’ new animated movie SPIES IN DISGUISE, and the new trailer teases a bit more of the shenanigans, although they must be saving the more bird-centric gags for later.

The first teaser introduced us to super spy Sterling, who then gets turned into a quick-witted pigeon after Walter’s (Tom Holland) experiment goes wrong. This new trailer doesn’t show off much more, albeit digs into what leads up to the pigeon transformation a bit more. While that doesn’t show off much of the meat of the story, or what will provide the best gags, it’s enough to make this look like a fun, disposable animated flick for the young ones, and even one with a pretty admirable SKYFALL reference at the start.

Directed by longtime Blue Sky animators in their directorial debut, Troy Quane and Nick Bruno, the movie also stars Ben Mendelsohn (maybe as a villainous crow?), Karen Gillan, Rashida Jones, DJ Khaled and Masi Oka.

Here's a synopsis:

Super spy Lance Sterling (Will Smith) and scientist Walter Beckett (Tom Holland) are almost exact opposites. Lance is smooth, suave and debonair. Walter is … not. But when events take an unexpected turn, this unlikely duo are forced to team up for the ultimate mission that will require an almost impossible disguise – transforming Lance into the brave, fierce, majestic… pigeon. Walter and Lance suddenly have to work as a team, or the whole world is in peril. "Spies in Disguise" flies into theaters this Christmas.

SPIES IN DISGUISE is in theaters Christmas 2019.
