David Gebroe (right) hasn’t been behind the camera since 2004 for ZOMBIE HONEYMOON, but if all goes according to plan, that will change soon. He has a script written for a retro werewolf flick called BAD VIBES that is getting close to lensing. Check out the early teaser art below.
Gebroe describes the plot to Fangoria, “BAD VIBES is a hippie werewolf movie that literalizes the death of the ’60. Set in the Bay Area during late 1969, it’s about a psychedelic rock band called Sunrise Majesty who sequester themselves away on their communal ranch while they work on their new album. Unfortunately, their lead singer Max has contracted a mysterious venereal disease that transforms him into a werewolf – but not the kind that’s affected by full moons. Max transforms every time he’s around a square, making him more like a ‘squarewolf.’ When in the company of other hippies, he finds himself compelled to have sex with them to spread the ‘disease.’
“After transforming the rest of the band, Sunrise Majesty holds a love-in on their ranch to which only their most die-hard fans are invited. The plan? To have sex with them all, transform them into ‘squarewolves’ and send them out into the world to eliminate the terminally unhip. This will be the next step in the evolution of the werewolf film.”
Unsurprisingly, some genre veterans are interested in getting in on the action. “John Landis has given his commitment to serving either as an executive producer or in a ‘John Landis presents’ capacity. Because of the AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON connection, that’s obviously quite a significant endorsement. In addition, KNB EFX’s Greg Nicotero has expressed his interest in providing special effects makeup, and is so in love with the project that he has offered to help produce the film as well.
“Ariel Pink of Haunted Graffiti is also on board as a producer, and is in the process of creating the soundtrack for the film too. In fact, the first several songs recorded for the film will be posted on-line to garner exposure and interest in the project before it even goes into production, and the next Haunted Graffiti record, including music both from and inspired by the film, will be called Bad Vibes.”
Talk about a good trip! No one can deny the originality of that plot, and it sounds like this one is shaping up to be a great independent flick. Stay tuned for future developments on the project.
