Classic horror returns with the gothic anthology The Mortuary Collection

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Remember when horror movies were both scary and fun? Writer and director Ryan Spindell does, and he'll be delivering both the frights and the excitement with a new anthology that harkens back to the surreal storytelling of "The Twilight Zone" and the goopy aesthetics of "Tales From The Crypt" with THE MORTUARY COLLECTION, an upcoming anthology that sounds like quite the treat for genre fans.

In the 80s, the lines that defined cinematic genre were less rigid. GREMLINS were household pets and movie monsters were sculpted works of art, not computer generated creatures. THE MORTUARY COLLECTION is a love-letter to that era, a time when all things weird and wonderful seemed possible. Loaded with unexpected twists, dark humor and genuine scares, THE MORTUARY COLLECTION hopes to be classic horror for a contemporary audiences.

An eccentric mortician spins four twisted tales of madness and the macabre in a sleepy New England town where nothing is as it seems.

On the run from the police, a misguided young girl takes refuge in a decrepit old mortuary. There she meets Montgomery Dark, an eccentric undertaker with more than a few skeletons in his closet. Montgomery chronicles the strange history of the town through a series of twisted tales, each more terrifying than the last, but the young girl's world is unhinged when she discovers that the final story… is her own.

The team behind THE MORTUARY COLLECTION recently released a kickass short documentary WE COME IN PIECES, a love-letter to the anthology format featuring horror icons like Joe Dante (GREMLINS), Michael Dougherty (TRICK R TREAT), Larry Fessenden (ABC'S OF DEATH 2), Darin Scott (TALES FROM THE HOOD) and many more. You can check that out HERE.

Even cooler, THE MORTUARY COLLECTION features concept art by Karl Slominski (www.slomotionart.net), and you can check out some of his work in the video below. Pretty damn impressive stuff here. Says Slominski…

"I'm a comic book artist by trade- which is naturally a limitless world. You don't have to handicap your sense of irrational creativity or imagination; I jump headfirst into any project and it allows me to be limitless.  In the studio I tend to work quickly with the sole company of the music in my headphones and the ink I'm smearing with reckless abandonment across the page. I don't like second-guessing lines or finding that perfect detail; where it falls, so shall it remain. I know a lot of people in the industry are transitioning to a more digital mixed-media set-up, but I stick to the tried and true pen & ink. Analogue in the digital era."
