Has there been movement on the Goosebumps movie?

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

The last update we received on the long-awaited feature film version of R.L. Stine’s popular GOOSEBUMPS books was in January, when the project got a bit of new life in the form of SHREK EVER AFTER writer Darren Lemke. And, well, that was obviously some time ago. So where are we with this flick?

Cinemablend has a discouraging update straight from Mr. Stine himself. Seems as though the author was recently out promoting his latest book, Red Rain, and had the question of whether or not we’ll see that GOOSEBUMPS movie anytime soon posed to him. Here’s his response:

“I’ve been reading about [a Goosebumps movie] for 20 years, you know? (Chuckles) I never believe those things until I see them. Movies just don’t happen [for my works], I’ve had much better luck on television….I haven’t had much movie luck. I mean it’s very hard to get them to make a movie. Look at Maurice Sendak, right? Where the Wild Things Are. When he wrote that book he was in his 30s, and when the movie came out he was in his 80s. So, I’m waiting. I’m waiting.”

For an entire generation of people who grew up reading Stine’s books, it would be a damn shame to have to wait another few decades for GOOSEBUMPS to finally materialize on the big screen. Guess we’ll just have to hope that work continues behind-the-scenes on the project.
