Joel Soisson brought on board to produce and re-write Piranha 3DD

Last Updated on July 23, 2021

The other day we brought you the news that The Weinstein Company had pushed back John Gulager’s PIRANHA 3DD to a November 23 release. While the decision was questionable – horror around the holidays isn’t exactly a recipe for success – it seems that the Weinsteins are looking to make the most of the flick.

The sequel was greenlit as soon as Alexandre Aja’s PIRANHA remake made a splash at the box office last year and was rushed into production. Things may have been moving too fast for its own good, but an expert has been brought on board to smooth things out: Joel Soisson will produce and re-write Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton’s script.

Soisson is no stranger to the genre, having worked on the scripts for such films as DRACULA 2000, TRICK OR TREAT, and a bunch of lame direct-to-video sequels. He has also produced BILL & TED’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2, THE PROPHECY and FEAST (also from Gulager, Dunstan and Melton).

The main reason he was brought on board, though, is apparently his knowledge of 3D. While the first film was post-converted, this one will be shot in real 3D. Soisson hasn’t worked directly on a 3D picture but is friends with Patrick Lussier, the man behind DRIVE ANGRY and MY BLOODY VALENTINE.

Despite IMDb having a plot summary and partial cast listing, that information is unsurprisingly all bogus. The movie hasn’t even started casting yet, but we’ll keep you updated. What is your take on these recent developments? Can Soisson help the project?
