Jurassic World 2 snags $150 million opening weekend

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

This past weekend, director J.A. Bayona's sequel to Colin Trevorrow's JURASSIC PARK reboot hit theatres across the U.S. and today we know how much cold hard cash the blockbuster snagged opening weekend. The sequel roared its way to the top of the box office with an impressive $150 million.

While this is an impressive number that surpassed expectations to be sure, it's down 28% from the original JURASSIC WORLD's opening weekend of $208.8 million in 2015. The film also scored an impressive "A-" Cinemascore rating, which is almost as good as the original's "A".

JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM played to an audience that was 54% male with 44% of the overall audience aged 25 years and older. A domestic performance around $350-375 million is expected. The film's worldwide total is currently $711.5 million, making it the third largest worldwide release of 2018 so far.

And then we have the new horror sensation HEREDITARY still hanging onto the charts at number 7 with $3.8 million. This brings the controversial horror movie's total to $35 million thus far. Good shite! Did you see either of these movies in theaters this past weekend? What did you think? Let us know below!

JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM is directed by Bayona from a screenplay by JURASSIC WORLD's Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, and has the following synopsis:

It’s been three years since theme park and luxury resort Jurassic World was destroyed by dinosaurs out of containment.  Isla Nublar now sits abandoned by humans while the surviving dinosaurs fend for themselves in the jungles.

When the island’s dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event.  Owen is driven to find Blue, his lead raptor who’s still missing in the wild, and Claire has grown a respect for these creatures she now makes her mission. Arriving on the unstable island as lava begins raining down, their expedition uncovers a conspiracy that could return our entire planet to a perilous order not seen since prehistoric times.

With all of the wonder, adventure and thrills synonymous with one of the most popular and successful series in cinema history, this all-new motion-picture event sees the return of favorite characters and dinosaurs—along with new breeds more awe-inspiring and terrifying than ever before.  Welcome to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Wong, and Jeff Goldblum return to the franchise for this new entry and are joined by JURASSIC newcomers such as Daniella Pineda, Toby Jones, Rafe Spall, Justice Smith, Geraldine Chaplin, Brooke Norbury, and Ted Levine.
