Considering Peter Jackson's involvement in the project (and the fact that director Guillermo del Toro has been publicly proclaiming it), Sir Ian McKellan's return to the role of wizard Gandalf for THE HOBBIT won't surprise anyone.

But it comes from the thespian's own mouth: "Yes, it’s true," McKellan tells Empire. "I spoke to Guillermo in the very room that Peter Jackson offered me the part and he confirmed that I would be reprising the role. Obviously, it’s not a part that you turn down, I loved playing Gandalf."

That sounds solid enough. McKellan also seems perfectly confident in del Toro's abilities, even with the movie(s) in such an early state. The director has also stated that Andy Serkis (Gollum's human incarnation) would return to for more terrorizing hobbitses and caressing the Precious.

Extra Tidbit: Sir Ian McKellan can teach you how to act. Seems simple enough!

Woop!
Great news, as expected as it was. These movies are going to kick all kinds of ass. Its not often you get to re-visit such an awesome cinematic universe years after the fact (or when you do, it's quite different - like the Star Wars prequels). I'm pumped!

YES!!!
This just keeps getting better and better. As a huge Tolkien fan (books and movie version), I am utterly thrilled. I can't wait to see McKellan as Gandalf again- and I totally think Martin Freeman would be perfect for Bilbo Baggins- I love Ian Holm, but I doubt he'd be up for it.

You're absolutely right!
I went "neutral" because I don't really care about the Tolkien movies. But I still know more than I wish to know. Anyway, I agree that Martin Freeman would be a good choice for a younger Bilbo.

Thank God!
Great to see Messers McKellan and Serkis back on board. Wouldn't be the same without them. I'm very anxious to see this one.

My greatest worry about 'The Hobbit' was that they wouldn't get it into production in time to retain McKellan (after all, he ain't exactly getting any younger), so this is great news!

MARTIN FREEMAN FOR BILBO!
He looks like a young Ian Holm and I think he would to a top notch job.
