A Craig-less Thor

10.22.2008

Daniel Craig Most fanboys probably have their own ideal choice for the lead role of Norse god Thor in Marvel's upcoming feature adaptation but apparently the studio originally had current 007 Daniel Craig in mind to portray the character. The folks over at the "IESB" recently caught up with Craig at a QUANTUM OF SOLACE press event and he mentioned that he had indeed been offered the part but turned it down joking that it'd be "too much of a power trip", what with already portraying an iconic superspy snatch magnet. Either way, it's an indicator of the kinda casting Marvel is thinking about. Who do you guys think they'll want who'll say yes? Gerard Butler? Ewan McGregor? Strike back below. THOR is set for a 2010 release.

Extra Tidbit: Thor first appears in "Journey into Mystery #83".

As far as Triple H....if he could act worth a damn, then he would be the perfect casting choice. I still say that getting an actual Norse actor to play the part (similar to how they did in 13th Warrior) would be ideal. As long as his accent isn't too thick, it would fit the sound and feel of Thor. Now, if they could only cram some great acting into someone with a godlike physique.

Fact not opinion

I'm not saying that Triple H should play Thor in the movie,(even though it would be pretty funny), I'm saying he IS Thor,
Here's proof

I aalways thoght the actor who played the head viking from the 13th warrior (Vladimir Kulich ) would make an excellent thor. allthough that Mckidd might do ok.

If it does take place entirely in Asgard, then I assume it will end with a teaser involving Thor coming into the Marvel Universe, so they can set him up to be in the Avengers.

I love Craig, hes a terrific actor, but, I don't think he looks right for Thor, even with long hair. Karl Urban would be great (just look at him in Pathfinder or LOTR)

I still say half the movie needs to take place in Asgard and the other half within the present, "avengers" universe. Maybe at the end have Sam

Antman/giant man and Wasp need to be introduced within the Avengers movie or maybe the Captain Amercia feature, but I dont think they have enough charcter to have their own movie, but they def. are important to the Avenger Initiative.

It just depends on what they want this movie to be... I guess Gerard Butler with a blonde wig would be okay if they wanted to make a B movie. But if they want to approach "TDK" status, then...I have no idea. So I guess either Gerard Butler or Brad Pitt as Thor. I just can't see this being translated into a movie right now.

We don't need a wrestler, we need an actor

I realize a lot of people are getting hung up on the character's appearance thinking Marvel has to hire some 6'5" 300 lbs. muscleman for the role. However, I think most of us will agree that it's much more important that they get a talented actor, who'll contribute to the quality of the movie, rather than somebody who looks like the perfect embodiment of the character.

Edward Norton doesn't look much like most versions of Bruce banner but he was great in the movie, why? Because he's a talented actor. I'm personally completely against the idea of hiring some wrestler or athlete based on their physique rather thatn talent. If they hire a wrestler nobody's going to take the movie seriously and it will bomb. Most action films starring wrestlers (such as The Marine or The Condemned) don't even make their budgets back and they're working with a fraction of the budget this movie will be looking at.

I agree that most superhero movies don't need A list stars (although I hate the idea of hiring complete unknowns rather than an up and comer or character actor who'd love to finally get their big break) but I think Thor would really bennefit from having a recognizable name attached to it. I'm not talking Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp, but at least someone on Downey or Norton's level. The character's not a household name and the premise is far-fetched enough that I'm not sure how well it'd fare at the box office if they don't hire a lead with at least some star appeal. That's why I like the idea of getting a recognizable face for Blake and then someone like McKidd (who looks close enough to the part but is actually talented) for Thor.

I actually really like WalterKovacs idea of Ethan Hawke for Blake, he hasn't been that visible lately but I'd say he's about as well-known as Downey was before Iron Man.

ok, so i looked up kevin mckidd...

...and yeah, that dude looks dead on like Thor. I hope he's been considered. The only other suggestion I could make is Karl Urban, if they can make him look as badass as he did in LOTR. Remember, this guy needs to look like a fkn god, not a 40 somethin' american sex symbol. Those that still think everyone in the eventual Avengers film needs to be close in age or anybody that still thinks Pitt or McConnaughey can play these characters - u guys are talking a buncha HORSESHIT! Anyways, does the

Anyways, does the current script include Blake? I heard it takes place entirely in Asgard, but I agree that if he is included, two seperate actors would have to be cast to properly portray the blake/thor duality. Oh, and as much as I like Craig, i'm not sure how that would've played out... he could be a pretty buff Don Blake tho!

How about Ethan Hawke? They should cast an actor who is out of context for the character but who is an excellent actor in his own right. Also consider the age range which will play a factor, especially for the team up in the eventual AVENGERS movie: Downey Jr. and Norton are both in their late 30's/early 40's respectively, even Craig himself is 40 and they offered the role to him...

And I've said it before, I really think Mathew McConaughey would be great as CAPTAIN AMERICA plus it would sort of be a career revival for him as IRONMAN was for Downey Jr. and THOR could be for Ethan Hawke, and they're all close to the same age. Just a thought...

I agree with no_fun, Triple H, would be a great THOR. He was pretty good in that blade movie. with some acting lessons for a superhero lead roll, he could do it.

Phew! Craig wouldn't fit the part at all. I mean, this is the Norse god of thunder we're talking about here! You've got to be able to just look at him and go, "Damn!" Don't get me wrong, I love Danny Craig, but he's no Nordic god.

Tyler Mane (sabertooth from x-men) would be the best fit if focusing on appearence. I think a lesser known actor would be best for this role, especially when it comes to organizing the avengers movie.

Guys!Guys!GUYS!!!!

Has everyone forgotten that Thor should be BIG??? Like HUGE??? Or maybe since Hollywood already violated certain character tenets by making Wolverine a 6'2" inch stud, Ben Grimm a chubby smurf and Elektra a green eyed, redhead, we can just overlook these things....
I still say they should have used Johnny Messner or Andrew Bryniarski for Ben Grimm and I would nominate Matthias Hues for Thor. Get a pretty boy, big name for Don Blake, but Thor needs to be imposing.

As for Cap, I say Randy

I personally would like a kind of unknown to play Thor. Someone that would sign on for 3+ movies(Including Avengers.)

As for "known" actors, what about Aaron Eckhart? Or would he be better suited as Capt. America?

I wouldn't have pegged Craig as Thor but I think it was a good call. Personally I think they should hire two seperate actors, a recognizable name for Blake and then a lesser known for Thor. In the comics they're supposed to have different physical appearances anyway so I think this would work well. I'd pick someone like Adrian Brody for Blake so that you have your marquee name, then someone like Kevin McKidd who can both act and pull off the look but would be pretty cheap because he's not a big

Meh

I've never read too many Thor comics. It just always seemed to me that a movie adaptation of something like Thor would come across as cheesy and a bit campy no matter how someone handled it. It just never came across as the type of movie that would have a broad audience appeal, unlike something like Spider-Man, Batman, X-Men, Iron Man, etc.

But I'll reserve judgment until I see some substantial indications of what direction this is going in.

This just shows how good of an actor Daniel Craig is when it comes to choosing roles. Granted, I would have loved to see this, but at least it shows he's not in it for the paycheck. Plus, he's already playing an iconic character, possibly even more so than Thor.
